Gardens at
Longford House
where Sydney
Owenson, who
later became Lady
Morgan, wrote in
the late 1700's and
O'Carolan, the
blind harpist,
composed harp
music, several
generations
before her famous
book, THE WILD
IRISH GIRL was
published.
I am presently working
on a book for pre-teens
about Sydney Owenson
who lived here in County
Sligo at the beginning of
her prolific writing
career.
This cape was purchased in
Maynooth in 1984. I still wear it!

COOGA THE BOG DOG
We got Cooga 4 years ago. He had
been thrown out of a car along
with his sister and cared for by a
kind young woman until he was
placed with us. We had called the
Sligo animal rescue looking for a
dog and they referred us to
Lureen, who took him in, when
there was no room at the dog
shelter. She named him "Sock"
because he had one white paw.
We called him "Cooga" after  the
townland where he was rescued.
He was still a puppy at the
time--but almost full grown. He has
made himself right at home with us
and sleeps either with my
daughter, Rebecca, at the foot of
her bed, or on the family sofa. He
is not afraid of foxes and chases
them when they come around the
sheep in the back fields. And he
has natural sheep  herding ability
as he demonstrated when the
sheep in the field in back of our
house escaped into the roadway.
He blocked their escape and
chased them back into the field
through the hole in the ancient
stone wall.

MORE THAN A MEDAL
I was lucky enough to meet
Morgan Llywelyn in County Meath
in April. She is the most prolific
Irish historical novelist today with
over 40 million books in print. She
was kind enough to spend hours
of her precious time and it was
hard not to reveal how star-struck
I was!
